Running a Sales Discovery Call That Actually Qualifies the Deal

PRODUCT

The discovery call's job is not to pitch — it is to determine whether there is a real problem, whether this prospect can actually solve it with your product, and whether they have the authority and budget to move forward. Reps who skip straight to product features on a discovery call are optimizing for their own comfort over the prospect's actual decision process.

The structure that qualifies rather than pitches

  • Open with their world, not your product: 'walk me through how this works today' surfaces the real problem in the prospect's own language, before any solution framing anchors the conversation.
  • Quantify the pain: 'how much time/money does this cost you currently?' turns a vague frustration into a business case — the number the prospect states themselves is more persuasive later than any number the rep provides.
  • Identify the decision process explicitly: who else needs to be involved, what does the buying process typically look like, what would need to be true for this to move forward. Skipping this is the single most common cause of deals stalling later.
  • Confirm budget reality, tactfully: not asking directly for a number, but establishing whether budget exists and roughly what range is plausible — silence here is a red flag worth surfacing early rather than discovering in month three.

What to listen for

  • Specific versus vague pain: 'we lose about 10 hours a week on this' is a real problem; 'it would be nice to improve this' is not urgent enough to close.
  • Who else is mentioned unprompted: a prospect who volunteers 'I'd need to check with my manager' has told you the real buying process without being asked directly.
  • Energy shifts: moments where the prospect leans in or asks a follow-up question themselves are worth returning to later in the call — they are pointing at what actually matters to them.

Where the transcript pays off after the call

Discovery calls generate the exact language — the prospect's own words about their pain, their budget signals, their decision process — that should shape the entire rest of the sales cycle, and reps routinely lose the specifics within a day. An accurate transcript preserves the prospect's actual phrasing for the proposal and follow-up, rather than the rep's paraphrased memory. MeetOye's Oya captures this automatically and attributes it by speaker, so 'what exactly did they say their timeline was?' has a precise answer via Ask Oya weeks later, when the deal is moving through approval and the details matter.

Introducing Oya — the AI that sits in every MeetOye call

Every MeetOye meeting ships with Oya, a built-in assistant that listens, transcribes, translates and emails a recap. No bots to invite, no plugins to install.

Live translation, explained — everyone speaks their own language

A participant speaks Urdu, another reads English, a third reads Arabic — all in the same call, in near real time. Here is how MeetOye makes that feel effortless.
