Zoom Fatigue: What Causes It and How to Fix It

Zoom fatigue — the exhaustion that comes from too many video calls — was extensively studied during the pandemic and remains a significant problem for remote and hybrid teams in 2026. Stanford researchers identified four causes in 2021 that still hold: excessive close-up eye contact, seeing yourself on screen, reduced mobility, and the cognitive load of video communication. Understanding which cause is dominant for your team leads to better solutions than the standard advice of 'take more breaks.'

The four causes and their fixes

  • Excessive close-up eye contact: large face-to-face video tiles feel unnatural at normal interpersonal distance. Fix: reduce window size, use non-gallery views, turn off video for audio-only discussions.
  • Seeing yourself on screen: self-view creates a performance anxiety loop. Fix: hide self-view in your platform settings — all major platforms support this.
  • Reduced mobility: video calls pin you to your desk. Fix: use audio-only for calls that do not need screen sharing; walking meetings are more cognitively efficient than seated ones.
  • High cognitive load: non-verbal cue processing is harder on video. Fix: reduce meeting count rather than duration — fewer meetings with better agendas produce less fatigue than shorter meetings with no clear purpose.

Meeting design as a fatigue fix

The most effective Zoom fatigue reduction is not a technical setting — it is meeting design. A meeting that ends with a clear written record of what was decided (AI recap, action items) requires less in-meeting note-taking anxiety, which is a meaningful cognitive load reducer. Teams using MeetOye's Oya recap report that they are more present in meetings when they know the recap is handled automatically.

When the fix is fewer meetings, not better meetings

For teams averaging more than 4 hours of video calls per day, the fix is structural: audit which recurring meetings could be async messages, which standups could be async written updates, and which check-ins could be replaced by a shared dashboard. A good meeting AI tool like MeetOye helps here by making the decisions from each meeting searchable — reducing the need for catch-up meetings when people miss calls.

Introducing Oya — the AI that sits in every MeetOye call

Every MeetOye meeting ships with Oya, a built-in assistant that listens, transcribes, translates and emails a recap. No bots to invite, no plugins to install.

Live translation, explained — everyone speaks their own language

A participant speaks Urdu, another reads English, a third reads Arabic — all in the same call, in near real time. Here is how MeetOye makes that feel effortless.
